Pharmacological effects

(1) Anti-pathogenic microbial effects In vitro experiments have shown that the decoction of Zhi Mu has a strong inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus and S. typhi, and to varying degrees on S. dysenteriae, S. paratyphi, E. coli, Bacillus subtilis, Vibrio cholerae, B. deformans, B. diphtheriae, S. pneumoniae, β-hemolytic streptococcus and Candida albicans. The crude crystals obtained from ethanolic extract, etheric extract and etheric extract treated with acetone had a strong inhibitory effect on H37RV human subspecies of Mycobacterium tuberculosis cultured on P and B medium, among which the etheric extract had the highest antibacterial potency against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In contrast, saponins had no effect. However, it was reported that a water-soluble saponin was extracted from the maidenhair, which had a strong inhibitory effect on Mycobacterium tuberculosis, especially Candida albicans; and another flavonoid crystals, which also had an inhibitory effect on Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In guinea pigs, experimental tuberculosis was treated with 3% of the drug for 3-4 months, and it was effective; it also reduced the lung lesions of experimental tuberculosis mice, but the mortality rate was not reduced; if the concentration of the drug was increased to 5%, the tuberculosis index (reflecting the general lung lesions) was close to that of isoniazid, but the mortality rate was higher than that of the control group, probably due to the higher toxicity of the drug itself. In addition, the decoction of 8%-20% of the decoction of C. chinensis has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on common pathogenic dermatophytes such as Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton communis, and Corynebacterium corynebacterium in Saber's medium. It has also been reported that the saponin of M. sinensis has an anthelmintic effect.

(2) Antipyretic effect The subcutaneous injection of 4g/kg of the saponin can prevent and treat high fever caused by E. coli in rabbits, and the effect is long-lasting. The saponins contained in the rhizome of C. sinensis have significantly reduced the increase of oxygen consumption rate caused by thyroxine and inhibited the activity of Na+, K+-ATPase.

(3) Effects on corticosteroid effects The administration of Shengdi Zhimu Licorice Soup or its single herbs to rats can increase the concentration of plasma cortisol inhibited by dexamethasone and prevent adrenal atrophy. The side effects of hormones can be reduced by taking the soup together with hormones. Similar to the aqueous decoction of Zhimu Saponin Yuan (Sarsaparilla Saponin Yuan), it can significantly reduce the RT value of brain β-receptors in mice with high thyroid hormone status, but it has no effect on the affinity, and can significantly improve the weight loss of mice with this status.

(4) Effect on blood glucose After the injection of dry extract of Zhi Mu (6g/kg) into normal rabbits, it had no effect on blood glucose, but the alcoholic extract could cause temporary increase in blood glucose. The aqueous extract of Zhi Mu can lower the blood glucose level of normal rabbits, especially the effect on tetraoxymidine diabetic rabbits is more significant. The extract of Bai Hu plus Ginseng Tang (Zhi Mu, Ginseng and Licorice) 0.5-1g/kg was also effective in lowering blood glucose in experimental diabetic mice by intraperitoneal injection, with a decrease of 120mg% 6 hours after administration. In normal rats, Zhi Mu could not enhance the oxidation of glucose, although it could promote the uptake of glucose in the diaphragm and adipose tissue, resulting in a mild increase in the glycogen content of the diaphragm, but a decrease in the liver glycogen content. In mice with experimental diabetes mellitus, intraperitoneal injection of 0.15g/kg of aqueous extract of Zhi Mu decreased blood glucose by 200mg% and reduced ketone bodies in urine at 5 hours. (5) Other effects The infusion of Zhi Mu has no significant effect on the isolated uterus of pregnant rabbits. The β-sitosterol extracted from the rhizomes of Zhi Mu in Xiling has good efficacy and no side effects in the treatment of squamous skin cancer and cervical cancer. The anti-tumor mechanism of action of C. sinensis saponin is related to its strong inhibitory effect on the pump of cell membrane. The niacin contained in Cimicifuga has been shown to maintain healthy skin and nerves and to promote the function of the digestive tract. The mangostin extracted from the leaves of Zhi Mu has a significant choleretic effect; it can also inhibit platelet aggregation.
